The Los Angeles County medical examiner has determined that former MLB player Sean Burroughs died from fentanyl intoxication earlier this year.
Burroughs was found unconscious in a parking lot next to his car after dropping his 6-year-old son off for a Little League game on May 9 in Long Beach, California. CPR was performed in an attempt revive him, but Burroughs was later pronounced dead at the scene at the age of 43.
The medical examiner this week ruled Burroughs' death as accidental.
The son of 1974 American League MVP Jeff Burroughs grew up in Long Beach, where he led the local team to back-to-back Little League World Series championships in 1982 and 1983.
Burroughs was selected ninth overall in the 1998 MLB Draft by the San Diego Padres, won an Olympic gold medal with Team USA in 2000 and made his big league debut in 2002. Primarily a third baseman, he played four seasons with the Padres and one with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays before making a comeback in 2011 with the Arizona Diamondbacks after missing five seasons.

Burroughs played one final season with the Minnesota Twins in 2012, retiring with a career batting average of .278 in 528 major league games.
